Hy-Vee, Inc., in partnership with its produce supplier Grimmway Farms, donated more than 36,000 whole carrots to The Salvation Army of Quincy Saturday.

Hy-Vee delivered the carrots to the food bank, which weighed approximately 21,600 pounds in total.

The donation comes as food banks across Illinois struggle to keep their shelves stocked with fresh produce due to increased demand from the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

“There’s no better time than now to give back to our communities,” said Jeff Huckaby, president of Grimmway Farms. “We are proud to work alongside Hy-Vee and support their mission of providing assistance to individuals and families in need across its eight states.”

“Our organization strives to bring hope and healing to people who find themselves in the midst of extremely difficult situations,” said Heidi Welty, regional director of social services for The Salvation Army of Quincy. “Hy-Vee’s donation will make a big impact in the counties we serve across Illinois and Missouri.”

“We are extremely grateful for our partnership with Grimmway Farms as we help care for our communities during this difficult time,” said Tina Potthoff, Hy-Vee’s senior vice president of communications. “We are committed to helping our local food banks, especially during this unprecedented time, and hope this donation will provide some relief to those in need in our local communities.”

The donation to The Salvation Army of Quincy is part of a series of donations that Hy-Vee and its suppliers are making to local communities and food banks across Hy-Vee’s eight-state region this spring.
